Saturday June 18th 12:30pm-4:00pm

Quilting for Seniors Sew-a-Thon

Saturday, June 18th from 12:30 – 4:00 Mom, Ava, and I are hosting a group
sew-a-thon at the PDX Seamsters for the Quilting for Seniors Project at

1412 SE Stark Street, Portland, OR 97214

You don’t need to be able to sew to participate. There are many things to do, for example we always need fabric cut, etc. Sewing machines are available for $5.00/session on site at PDX, but if you have your own machine that is cool too and there is now session charge.

Our little project is coming up on it’s third complete year. Time has flown by! We thank all of your who have given us fabric, given us others people’s fabric, cut strips, or just offered moral support. Cheerleaders are welcome. Choice was given our 675th quilt on 3/28/11 and by now they may all be in the laps of local seniors. We would like to exceed 750 completed quilts by the anniversary of this project – 6/27/08 was the beginning. We have work to do to get this accomplished.

If you have old clothes including jeans (even if they are stained or have holes) we are able to put them to work.

DIY Projects and Destination DIY

Hey Seamsters -- check this out!

Hi Emily & Jim,

Here is a picture of my dog (Moka) with her Royal Wedding Inspired dog hat. Honestly, I don't think my hand sewing "looks" great (I'm sure not professional looking by any means), but I was definitely confident enough to dive in and start the project after taking your Get Up and Sew classes (specifically hand sewing and machine basics). The hat took about 1 day (1/2 day Saturday shopping at SCRAP for materials and making my pattern and then 1/2 day Sunday for sewing and fitting/finishing). For the circle I hand sewed the fabric around my circular mold and for the "ribbon-esque" parts I machine sewed a couple fabric strips into tubes and then finished them with some hand sewing too. I also used hand sewing techniques to "tac" the ribbons to the circle mold and also the elastic chin strap.

Thinking back, I'm really amazed that I was able to start, but more importantly FINISH, this project!

Before taking your classes I was really good at starting a project, but then stopping because I wasn't confident in my ability to actually do the work (holding unrealistic expectations for myself, the finished product and what others would think of my work) and thus I lost the "fun" and "enjoyment" that I originally had when first inspired. Now, I feel I can start a project and just enjoy the process...including all my mistakes and pitfalls.

Thank you again for all your help and wonderful classes...I'm looking forward to signing up for Commercial Patterns as soon as I find a good pattern...I'm thinking Halloween Costume. :)

Have a great day,
Shino
